May Night!

Many of Kahuku's ELL students performed at the school's annual May Night performance held at the Polynesian Cultural Center on Friday May 9, 2008. Many of those not performing joined the audience to cheer for their classmates. The night was spectacular and had the students cheering from beginning to end. Students Entertain at 1st Annual Hawaii Stew Night

Thursday March 6, 2008 was a special night at Kahuku High and Intermediate School. Kahuku's ELL department hosted the first annual "Hawaii Stew Night." The night allowed students from many backgrounds to share their cultures with each other. Students from all the ELL classes along with their families, friends, teachers, and special guests gathered for a night of good food, good company, and great entertainment. The evening featured student performances representing many different nations including: Somoa, Tonga, China, Taiwan, The Philippines, Hong Kong, The Marshall Islands, Cambodia, Laos, Brazil, and Gabon. It was a special night at Kahuku and those involved left feeling excited to be part of such a wonderful and special community. Special thanks to Joyce Tupola, Aleta Wilkinson, and Cindy Nichols for their hard work to make this night a success. Thanks also to the many other members of the Kahuku community, including our student emcees, who contributed time to this exciting night.

A "Field Trip" to the 50-Yard Line

All work and no play makes life just plain boring. So on a Friday night in late October, several students of P-25 made a "field trip" to Kahuku's JV and Varsity playoff football games. We spent a fun night of cheering on our home teams. Not only did we come to cheer, however, several students in the ELL department play on Kahuku's teams, including Leka Aholelei, Tevita Vaifoou, and Too Atimua. For the non-players in our bunch, we had a great night enjoying the band, watching the cheerleaders, and rallying around our classmates who all played their hearts out. Best wishes to Leka as he moves on to the next round of the playoffs with the JV team. Congrats also to the Varsity team on a fabulous season. We're sad it had to end, but we're already excited for next year! Click here for a few more pictures of our evening.

The Sharpshooter of P-25

While Air Riflery may not be a sport that draws large cheering crowds, it is a sport that requires great concentration, mental focus, and practice, practice, practice. Furthermore, Air Riflery requires careful attention to critical safety procedures to protect both the participants and observers. Classroom P-25 has one of the most skilled marksmen at Kahuku High & Intermediate School, Mike Lin.
This past weekend (and on autumn many weekends), Mike helped Kahuku's Air Riflery team achieve a victory over Moanalua. While the match was close, what the final score of 1034 (Kahuku) to 1027 (Moanalua) doesn't reveal is that Kahuku beat Moanalua with a team nearly half the size of Moanalua's team. Mike Lin was a key player in Kahuku's win, shooting an individual score of well over 200. You can see more pictures of the match, and a few short video clips here. Congrats to Mike and the talented Kahuku team!

ELL Students Shine In and Out of Class

School has started once again and that means more than just getting back to class. For several ELL students at Kahuku, it also means the fall sports and activities season has also begun! Several students, including Tevita Vaifo'ou, To'oto'o Atimua, and Isilelei Aholelei bring their talent to the Varsity Football Team. In JV Football, Freshman Leka Aholelei debuted with a great showing in Kahuku's exhibition game against St.Louis.The football field is not the only place where Kahuku's ELL students shine, however. Sophomore Mike Lin shines on Kahuku's Air Riflery team. He also participates in Kahuku's JROTC program along with Senior Gordon Finau. Also look for Finau to patter out some sweet rhythms this fall with Kahuku's drum line.

Check back soon for more of the happenings of Kahuku's ELL department and its awesome students. And for more pictures of the JV and Varsity Football games against St.Louis click here.

Farewell ELL Students Class of 2007!

On Thursday, May 31, 2007 Kahuku High & Intermediate School held its annual commencement ceremony to honor its roughly 300 graduates. Among the graduates were seven students of the ELL program. We are sad to say goodbye to these students, but we are very proud of their accomplishments. Like many other things in Hawaii, graduation was a unique mix of Western and Polynesian. Students wore the traditional gown and mortarboard, but the ceremony included singing, dancing, and Polynesian drumming. Afterwards, parents set up tents outside the gym with lavish buffet tables of traditional Hawaiian food. No graduate left for the evening without a lei around his or her neck - and more likely they left with five or ten.ELL graduates include: John Ava, Henry Cocker, Joe Fereti, Timote Nai Fotu, Lolo Tilini, Hsu Ching-Hao, and Kemal Yildzoglu. Nearly all of these students are college bound in Fall 2007 or Fall 2008. Congratulations graduates! More pictures of graduation can be seen here.
