Farewell ELL Students Class of 2007!

On Thursday, May 31, 2007 Kahuku High & Intermediate School held its annual commencement ceremony to honor its roughly 300 graduates. Among the graduates were seven students of the ELL program. We are sad to say goodbye to these students, but we are very proud of their accomplishments. Like many other things in Hawaii, graduation was a unique mix of Western and Polynesian. Students wore the traditional gown and mortarboard, but the ceremony included singing, dancing, and Polynesian drumming. Afterwards, parents set up tents outside the gym with lavish buffet tables of traditional Hawaiian food. No graduate left for the evening without a lei around his or her neck - and more likely they left with five or ten.ELL graduates include: John Ava, Henry Cocker, Joe Fereti, Timote Nai Fotu, Lolo Tilini, Hsu Ching-Hao, and Kemal Yildzoglu. Nearly all of these students are college bound in Fall 2007 or Fall 2008. Congratulations graduates! More pictures of graduation can be seen here.

Kahuku's ELL Students Shine at Windward District Multicultural Speech Festival

In May, Kahuku's ELL students stepped forward - despite an unexpected school closing - and gave shining performances at the Windward District's Multicultural Speech Festival. Students from several area schools participated in the event, but Kahuku brought the largest delegation of students to the event. Each of Kahuku's three classes performed as a group: the 7th and 8th grade class performed challenging tongue-twisters by Dr. Seuss, the 9th and 10th graders performed a touching piece about a kind act of friend, and the 11th and 12th grade students performed an inspiring poem about perserverence. Finally, three brave students, Gordon Finau (11), Eseta Kamoto (10), and Micah Ruth Angeles (9) gave solo performances. Each of these students charmed the audience in a unique way. The event included cultural performances from many students and was followed by an outdoor lunch that allowed students from the different schools to relax and socialize. Kahuku's students enjoyed the event at the lovely Paliku Theater at the Windward Community College. Students rose to the occasion and proudly represented their school in classic Kahuku style. Students Perform at May Night

Three students from the ELL community performed in the May Night in April Celebration on Friday April 27, 2007. Fa Moimoi (11), Gordon Finau (11), and Nai Fotu (12) performed enthusiastically with the group performing a variation of a traditional Tongan dance.
